SATs Information
In the academic year 2014/15, a new curriculum framework was introduced. These new, more rigorous, tests reflect the changes to the National Curriculum and the new higher expectations.
At the end of Years 2 and 6, children will take SATs in:
- Reading
- Maths
- English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
For Year 2, the English grammar, punctuation and spelling test is not compulsory for the academic year 2016/17; however, it remains compulsory for Year 6. Writing will be internally assessed based on the work that the children have produced throughout the year.
WHEN WILL THE SATS TAKE PLACE?
The KS1 and KS2 SATs are due to be administered in May 2023.
HOW WILL THE TESTS BE MARKED?
All Year 6 tests all be marked externally. With regard to Year 2, although the tests are set externally, they will be marked by teachers within the school.
Instead of the old national curriculum levels, children will be given a standardised score. Assessments will also be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements.
INFORMATION ABOUT KS1 SATS
Key Stage 1 Reading
The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers covering a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
There will be a variety of question types:
- Multiple choice
- Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show in which order they happened in the story’
- Matching, e.g. ‘Match the character to the job that they do in the story’
- Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title’
- Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that shows what the weather was like in the story’
- Short answer, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
Key Stage 1 Maths
The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise of two papers:
- Paper 1: arithmetic.
- Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning.
There will be a variety of question types:
- multiple choice
- matching,
- true/false,
- constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method).
Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.
INFORMATION ABOUT KS2 SATS
Key Stage 2 Reading
The KS2 reading exam will consist of one one-hour examination. This will contain three texts, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. The content domain consists (question types) of:
- 2a give/explain the meaning of words in context
- 2b retrieve and record information/identify key details from fiction and non-fiction
- 2c summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph
- 2d make inferences from the text/explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text
- 2e predict what might happen from details stated and implied
- 2f identify/explain how information/narrative content is related and contributes to meaning as a whole
- 2g identify/explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases
- 2h make comparisons within the text
Key Stage 2 Maths
The KS2 maths exam will consist of three examinations; there is one arithmetic paper and two problem solving papers. The arithmetic test will contain 30+ questions which total 40 marks. Children will be tested on the four operations, percentages and fractions. The problem solving tests will require children to apply all that they have learned throughout Key Stage 2.
Like in KS1, children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.
