Week 1

Part of positive well-being is eating healthily. This can prove a challenge for some of us at the best of times but can be even more difficult when we are at home and not following our usual routines. This is true for young children too, who are more likely to choose a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate rather than a piece of fruit at snack time while at home.

 To encourage them to eat their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, which is vital to their healthy growth, you can start by involve them in food preparation by asking them to peel fruit such as tangerine or chopping soft fruit like bananas with a blunt knife.

Children can make fruit salads, fruit kebabs or even fruit/vegetable faces like in the examples below. This will be a fun way to encourage them towards eating their five portions of fruit and veg a day while sparking their interest around the colour, shape and texture of different fruit and veg.  Don’t worry if they don’t eat 5 portions to begin with, you could gradually increase the number of portions they eat per day over time. 

You could also have a reward system in place to encourage healthy eating further. For example, your child could earn a sticker or smiley face for every piece of healthy food they eat!
