Our trip to the Royal Armouries Museum

Year 4 had an unforgettable opportunity to visit the one and only intriguing and historical Royal Armouries Museum. What an amazing trip it was! During this interesting experience, we learned fantastic defence skills using shields and mighty swords. We all worked together to make a ‘tortoise shell’ which acted as a barrier against the Romans’ enemies – the Celts. We also learned about King Prasutagus and how he died, leaving vengeful Queen Boudicca to fight for freedom. They were fed up of paying taxes to the Romans. They had to give away their food, money, gold, silver, jewels and wool. Celts would go to battle wearing war paint. We even had a chance to hold mesmerising, fearsome weapons like swords, daggers, battle-axes and lengthy spears. We had so much fun listening to instructions like: ‘stand up straight’ and ‘march forward!’ shouting right and left in Latin (sin, dex). We also witnessed the most mind-blowing fight between a Celt and Roman! What a fight it was! We would love to visit again any day!

  • Y3 Synagogue Trip

    Published 16/10/19

On Thursday 10th October, Year 3 visited the United Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Leeds as part of the Judaism unit that we are learning about in RE.

We were given a talk about some Jewish rituals such as: Bar and Bat Mitzvah, the weekly observance of Shabbat, the observance of the Ten Commandments and much more. We were also shown the Holy Ark and the Torah scrolls and had a chance to examine the yad (pointer) which is used when reading the Torah.

This visit gave us a wider understanding of what happens inside a Jewish place of worship and Jewish traditions.

  • Y6 Yorkshire Air Museum

    Published 14/10/19

On Friday 11th October, Year 6 went on a trip to Yorkshire Air Museum. This relates to what children are studying in their ‘A Child’s War’ topic, which focuses on World War II.

During a short introduction, children learnt about the origins of the first flight and the subsequent developments of aviation. The guides took children on discovery tours of the various stages and applications of early flight development through to the use of aviation during WWII. As part of this activity, children were led to the main T2 Hangar and dispersal areas to discover WWII bomber and fighter aircraft. Children were also able to look at their bomb and aviation artifacts collection.

Using a carefully selected collection of historical items used in aviation during WWII, a guide informed children of what living conditions were like in England during wartime. The ‘hands on’ display was complemented by discovery tours of our original wartime RAF site and a look at their WWII aircraft collection, including their Handley Page Halifax bomber aircraft – the only one in Europe.

Despite the rainy weather, children were in great form throughout the day, asking and answering many questions

  • Y3 Yorkshire Wildlife Park

    Published 09/10/19

On Wednesday 2nd October, children in Y3 visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park as part of this half terms creative topic. We visited the park to see some of the predators that we have been learning about in school. For most of us, it was the first time being up and close to some of the world’s most dangerous predators.

In our workshop, we focussed on several animals in YWP’s collection and looked at their special adaptations. We all got to handle a range of animal bio-facts and live animals. Some of us were brave enough to touch a reptile. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel slimy.

We had the chance to drive some Lego police cars and to create our own cars to test drive.
